Agent-Driven Development Still Needs Product Judgment
By Obada Alsehli
An opinion on why domain understanding, explicit outputs, and independent validation remain central when coding agents accelerate implementation.
What remains when implementation accelerates
In my LinkedIn reflection on agent-driven development, the point I wanted to make was not simply that code can be produced faster. It was that deciding what to build becomes more important when implementation can be delegated in smaller, faster steps.
That does not make implementation easy or product judgment the only valuable skill. Generated code still has to fit a system, handle failures, and be reviewed. But a fast implementation of the wrong requirement remains the wrong result.
Define the output before delegating the task
The flow I described starts with understanding the domain, defining the product and its outputs, using agents to accelerate execution, and then reviewing, iterating, and redirecting.
A useful specification makes success concrete enough to inspect. What should the user be able to do? Which constraints must remain true? What observation would show that the implementation is wrong?
Breaking that work into small implementation tasks can make delegation more manageable. It does not remove responsibility for checking whether the pieces solve the intended problem when combined.
Product judgment and engineering judgment belong together
Knowing whether an idea should be built is not separate from understanding what it will take to make it work. Requirements, architecture, validation, and the consequences of failure inform one another.
I am still learning how to work well with this shift. My view is that clear thinking matters alongside execution speed: understand the problem, state the intended behavior, and keep an independent way to challenge the result.
The practical goal is not to generate the largest amount of code. It is to make better decisions about the software that should exist—and to remain accountable for the software that does.
